Oh, What a Night!

On the 10th of November, NCJWA Vic celebrated the 10th Year of its Caring Mums Program.

One of our very first volunteers opened up her home for this celebration. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sandra Zwier for her warm and generous hospitality. It was such a fitting place for the event to be held given her long involvement with the Caring Mums program.

Over 100 people attended the event and upon arrival, they walked through an arch of purple (Caring Mums’ colour) balloons and enjoyed a projected slide presentation showing the evolvement of the program since its inception 10 years ago.

We were thrilled to have the founders of the program, Viv Brass, who was the President, who together with Annette Sweet, the Executive Director in 2012, brought the program to fruition. These women recognised the value of the program from the start and with the support of the Board made it happen.

One highlight of the evening was listening to Caring Mums volunteer, Emily Nadelman with her participant, Maria. They both spoke of what the program meant to each other, spending time together every week. “I was lucky to be matched to the very best Caring Mum in the world. She offered me kindness, unconditional support and company while I navigated this very challenging journey.”

There was undoubtedly a strong sense of community and belonging as the past volunteers, staff and supervisors mixed with the current ones, as old friends reconnected and shared stories.

We were also fortunate to have some of our wonderful advocates and supporters celebrating with us, without whom, we would not be able to continue running the program.

I will close with the end of my speech which was aimed at everyone in the room, the volunteers, our wonderful staff, supporters, referrers, my own family, and Board:

“What you all do makes the journey of motherhood easier, and we know this has a flow-on effect to not only the children but to all the other primary relationships in a mother’s life. You are making a difference and I raise my glass to all of you.”

Michelle Kornberg Caring Mums Program Manager since 2011
